1. Define the business purpose
Write down what the funds would pay for, the amount you need, and your timeline. Separate one-time purchases from recurring operating expenses.
- Growth or an additional location
- Payroll or working capital
- Equipment purchase or lease
- Inventory and supplies
- Business property
- Refinancing existing business obligations
2. Prepare a document checklist
The exact requirements come from the provider. A useful starting checklist includes business registration, ownership information, bank statements, tax returns when requested, current financial statements, and an existing-debt schedule.
Be ready to explain actual operating history, revenue, expenses, repayment capacity, and how the funds will be used.
3. Understand the options you discuss
| Option | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Line of credit | How do draws, repayment, fees, and renewals work? |
| Term financing | What are total repayment, payment frequency, term, and prepayment provisions? |
| Equipment financing or lease | Who owns the equipment, what security is required, and what happens at the end? |
| SBA-backed financing | Which program fits the use of funds, and what does the participating lender require? |
| Business credit card | What are the APR, fees, guarantee requirements, and consequences after any introductory period? |
Eligibility and terms vary. Compare actual offers and the complete agreement.
4. Ask before you commit
- What is the total cost, not just the advertised rate?
- Is repayment daily, weekly, or monthly?
- Is a personal guarantee, collateral, or lien required?
- What happens if revenue changes or a payment is missed?
- Can I repay early, and does that reduce the total cost?
- What fees apply to the provider and any referring party?
